Reflections on Jan 2019 OC21 Symposium

Many insights captured from students during the January 4, 2019, OC21 Symposium activities. During the share out led by Greg, I strived to listen closely and transcribe verbatim comments shared by students about their course experience this past fall (Fall 2018). We were also successful in utilizing course-by-course Flipgrids for end-of-semester celebrations. Here are the collected student comments.

STUDENT PERSPECTIVES ABOUT ONLINE LEARNING

What aspect of your OC21 course experience was the most impactful?

  • learning how to communicate in an online course where there's not a teacher around you everyday.

  • time managements was really important. Avoid pushing everything to end of the week. We learned how to not to do this.

  • What we learned, how to teach ourselves things -- didn't always have a teacher around to tell us what to do.

  • Learned to be independent.

  • Learned time management.

  • A course we all enjoyed. Not a typical class we would have had offered in our school.

  • the fact that for all of us it was our 1st online course.

  • How assignments are handled.

  • How we communicated.

  • Everyone talked about our guest speaker -- a real anthropologist, were able to see what they actually do.

  • was not only the fact that was an online class, but being able to talk to and build friendships with other teenage writers.

  • how diverse even such a small group can be.

What advice would you give a friend who was interested in taking an OC21 course?

  • how important to organize your time.

  • have a scheduled work time.

  • aim to get things done before it's due.

  • You get out of this course what you put into it.

  • If you're passionate about the course you'll get the reward.

  • The reward is what you put in.

  • time management.

  • was a lot harder to keep up with stuff because not a teacher you see everyday. Reminding you that you even have an assignment.

  • make sure you're passionate about the subject of the course. It’s a lot of work and easy to forget about so make.

  • how to juggle your time -- balance with other school/life activities

  • there’s not always a teacher reminding you.
